Sixteen schoolchildren had a narrow escape when a private school van carrying them fell into a ditch in Mogappair due to negligent driving.
The accident occurred on Tuesday at 1.45 p.m. when the van was bringing students back from school.
Police said the van was engaged by parents to bring the children from Vellammal School every day.
The driver took the vehicle to Vellalar Street in Nolambur knowing that the road was dug up for stormwater drain work.
He lost control of the van and after a sudden jerk, the vehicle tipped over into the ditch. The children were pulled out through windows and doors.
K. Krishnamoorthy, Inspector of Police, Nolambur, came to the spot and rescued others. He called their parents.
Mr. Krishnamoorthy said, “The driver Jacob, 31, has been arrested for rash and negligent driving. Luckily, no one was hurt.”
